Bentheim Castle

Bad Bentheim, Germany 11th Century

About This Landmark

Burg Bentheim, the quarry's namesake, has stood proudly for over a millennium. This imposing hilltop castle is one of the largest in northwest Germany, built from the very stone that lies beneath it.

The Stone Behind the Landmark

Bentheimer sandstone is a fine-grained quartz sandstone with a compressive strength of 78 MPa and excellent frost resistance — tested to EN 12371. Its warm golden colour comes from natural iron oxide inclusions.
